According to the Matsya Purana, a battle occurred between Lord Shiva and the demon Andhakasura. During the battle, a drop of Lord Shiva's sweat fell to the ground, resulting in the birth of the planet Mars. Mars absorbed all the blood from the demon's body and turned red. After the battle, all the gods established a Shivling at that spot and named it Mangalnath Mahadev. This temple is located in Ujjain, which is thus referred to as the 'Birthplace of Mars.'
