Lord Ganesh, known as Vighnaharta (Remover of Obstacles), Sukhkarta (Giver of Happiness), and Dukhharta (Remover of Sorrow), is worshipped by 1008 names. According to legends, in ancient times, a demon named Anlasur terrorized sages and humans by swallowing them, creating havoc in heaven and on Earth. All the gods and sages prayed to Lord Shiva, who declared that only Lord Ganesh could defeat this demon. Lord Ganesh swallowed Anlasur, but this caused severe burning in his stomach. Sage Kashyap gave Ganesh Durva grass with 21 knots to eat, which immediately soothed the burning sensation. Since then, offering Durva grass to Lord Ganesh has become a tradition. Therefore, chanting Lord Ganesh’s 1008 names and offering Durva grass with each name on Wednesday is considered highly auspicious.
