He and his parents created a Shiva Lingam from the sand at the confluence of the Ganga and Gomti rivers and began worshipping Lord Shiva with immense devotion. When Markandey turned 14, Yamaraj (the god of death) came to take him. At that moment, Markandey was deeply engrossed in the worship of Lord Shiva. As Yamaraj approached, Lord Shiva appeared before them. Upon Shiva’s arrival, Yamaraj had to retreat.
Lord Shiva declared that His devotee Markandey would remain immortal, and that Markandey's worship would precede even His own. From that moment, this site became a sacred place for worship, dedicated to both Markandey and Lord Shiva. Sage Markandey became an eternal figure, symbolizing the triumph of devotion over destiny. This story highlights why devotees visit the Markandey Mahadev Temple to seek blessings for longevity, protection, and the courage to face life's challenges with faith.
