According to an ancient legend, when King Daksha cursed the Moon, he suffered from a disease and lost all his powers. At that time, Sage Narada advised the Moon to worship Lord Shiva. With Lord Shiva's blessings, the Moon was cured of its ailment. The Moon then requested Lord Shiva to carry it on His head, a request which Lord Shiva accepted. Since then, the combined worship of Lord Shiva and the Moon has been considered highly significant. It is believed that one of the names of the Moon is Mrityusamharakay, which means "One who holds back death”, as it is said that the Moon can postpone death. Similarly, Lord Shiva, worshipped through the Mahamrityunjay Mantra, is regarded as the conqueror of death. In this aspect, the Moon and Shiva are seen as interconnected. The Moon's cool and soothing influence complements Lord Shiva's destructive power, symbolizing the preservation and balance of life.
