According to legend, Sage Mrigashringa and Suvrata had no children, so they performed severe penance to please Lord Shiva, who blessed them with a son, but also revealed that the boy would live only until the age of 16. Markandeya was born as their son. When he turned 15, his parents informed him of his short lifespan. Markandeya composed the Mahamrityunjay Mantra and immersed himself in the worship of Lord Shiva. When Markandeya turned 16, Yama, the god of death, came to take him away, but Markandeya clung to a Shiva Linga. Pleased by his devotion, Lord Shiva appeared and granted him immortality, declaring that whoever chants the Mahamrityunjay Mantra would be freed from all troubles and the fear of untimely death. On the other hand, in the Shiv Sahasranama Rudrabhishek, the thousand names of Lord Shiva are recited while bathing the Shiva Linga with various substances. When this ritual is performed at any Jyotirlinga, it yields manifold benefits. Therefore, on Monday, 51,000 Mahamrityunjay Mantra Jaap and Shiv Sahasranama Rudrabhishek Pujan will be organised at the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga temple.
