Holika Dahan is a significant festival in Hinduism, celebrated on the evening of the full moon in the month of Phalguna. On this day, the symbolic burning of Holika takes place, also known as Chhoti Holi, followed by the tradition of playing with colours the next day, which is called Dhulandi. This festival is associated with the legend of devotee Prahlad, King Hiranyakashipu, and Holika. According to the story, Hiranyakashipu was enraged by his son Prahlad’s devotion to Lord Vishnu and made several attempts to kill him. However, Lord Vishnu protected Prahlad every time. In the end, Hiranyakashipu sought the help of his sister Holika, who had a boon that made her immune to fire. He ordered her to kill Prahlad by making him sit on her lap while she entered the fire. But by divine intervention, Holika was burnt to ashes while Prahlad remained unharmed. This story signifies that arrogance, injustice, and unrighteousness are always doomed to perish, while true devotion and faith are protected by the divine. Thus, through Holika Dahan, people symbolically destroy evil and welcome the grace of the God, helping them surrender all obstacles, doshas, and negative influences and move towards a new and positive beginning.
In our Sanatan tradition, Holika Dahan is considered a highly sacred and auspicious ritual, where offering specific substances into the fire holds profound spiritual significance. It is believed that offering lotus seeds (Kamal Gatta) invokes the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi, bringing wealth and prosperity into one's life, while black sesame seeds help eliminate evil forces, the evil eye, and negative energies. It is said that offering Guggul (a sacred resin) into the holy fire purifies the environment, removing negativity and enhancing the flow of positive energy. Burning cow dung cakes is believed to cleanse sins and free one from karmic bondages, paving the way for peace, stability, and spiritual growth. Devotees believe that by offering these divine substances into the sacred Holika fire, they receive blessings of wealth, protection, purification, and prosperity. Additionally, to enhance the spiritual potency of this sacred ritual, performing Lord Vishnu’s worship and applying a tilak of roli (vermilion) is considered highly significant, as it ensures divine grace and protection in life.
