In Sanatan Dharma, the day of Ratha Saptami is considered highly sacred and significant. According to scriptures, on the Shukla Saptami (seventh day of the waxing moon) of the month of Magha, Lord Surya (the Sun God) began illuminating the entire universe with his divine radiance while riding his chariot. Hence, this day is known as Ratha Saptami. This festival is also celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion as the birth anniversary of Lord Surya and is therefore called Surya Jayanti. According to legend, Samba, the son of Lord Krishna, who was extremely proud of his beauty and strength, once insulted Sage Durvasa. Enraged by this insult, the sage cursed him with leprosy. Troubled by the curse, Samba sought guidance from Lord Krishna, who is a form of Narayana. Lord Krishna advised Samba to worship Lord Surya. Following this advice, Samba performed intense penance on the banks of the Chandrabhaga River. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Surya appeared before him and blessed him with freedom from leprosy. After being cured, Samba expressed his gratitude by building a magnificent temple dedicated to Lord Surya in Konark, which remains a major center of faith for devotees to this day.
