According to scriptures, this Stotra was composed by Adi Guru Shankaracharya. Once, while seeking alms, he reached a poor Brahmin’s house. Upon seeing him, the Brahmin’s wife became embarrassed, as she had nothing to offer. In tears, she humbly gave Shankaracharya the only thing she had—some dried gooseberries. Seeing their plight, Shankaracharya was moved with compassion and immediately composed a stotra addressing Goddess Mahalakshmi, who bestows great wealth and prosperity. As soon as he recited the Stotra, it is said that a shower of gold rained down. The word “Kanak” means gold and “Dhara” means flow. Due to the golden rain, this stotra became famous as the Kanakadhara Stotra. Performing the Vyapar Vriddhi Mahalakshmi Samriddhi Havan and the Kanakadhara Stotra Maha-Path on the auspicious day of Dhanteras, is believed to bless devotees with material wealth in both personal and professional life.
