In the Garuda Purana, Bhagwan Vishnu explains to Garuda Dev (the king of birds) that those who face untimely or unnatural deaths or due to bad karma, may face the sufferings of Pishach Yoni (ghost realm) and cause trouble for others. For the salvation of such souls, performing Narayan Bali and Naag Bali Puja is considered highly effective. Lord Vishnu further explains that these special rituals should be performed by experienced pandits on the banks of holy rivers like the Ganga.
