On the tireless prayers of the devotees, Lord Shiva gathered Ganga in his Jata (locks) and after that Maa Ganga reached the earth via Kailash and saved the ancestors of Bhagiratha. Due to Bhagirath's efforts, the Ganga flowing from Gomukh is also known as Bhagirathi. After flowing some distance, when it merges with the Alaknanda River at Devprayag, it is known as Ganga.
