According to the Vedic Panchang, the Amavasya Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the Phalguna month is known as Phalguna Amavasya. This tithi holds great significance in Sanatan Dharma. As mentioned in the Puranas, it is believed that negative energies reach their peak on this day, and to dispel them, devotees worship various deities. Among them, Maa Kali and Lord Hanuman are revered for their protective and powerful presence in eliminating negativity and evil forces. Therefore on this auspicious day, a combined puja of Panchmukhi Hanuman and Maa Kali will be organized at the Shaktipeeth Kalighat Temple in Kolkata, as these two divine forms share a unique connection. The connection between Panchmukhi Hanuman and Maa Kali is rooted in a powerful legend. Ahiravan and Mahiravan, two sorcerer brothers ruling the underworld (Patala Loka), were ardent devotees of Goddess Kali. Known for their mastery of black magic and illusion, they assisted Ravana when he was losing the war against Rama. Using their powers, the brothers kidnapped Rama and Lakshmana and transported them to Patala Loka, plunging the Vanara army into deep sleep.
When Hanuman awoke, he vowed to rescue Rama and Lakshmana. Traveling to Patala Loka, he faced fierce challenges, including an encounter with Makardhwaja, who revealed that five magical lamps placed in different directions had to be extinguished simultaneously to defeat the demon army. Transforming into his Panchmukhi (five-faced) form, Hanuman extinguished the lamps, killed the sorcerer brothers, and safely rescued Rama and Lakshmana. In some interpretations, Kali herself is believed to have supported Hanuman by granting him strength or ensuring his divine mission succeeded. This highlights the idea that Guhya Kali’s power ultimately serves cosmic balance and righteousness. Guhya Kali represents transformation and the destruction of ego and ignorance. Through the defeat of Ahiravan and Mahiravan, the story aligns with Kali’s role as a purifier and restorer of cosmic order. This act symbolizes Hanuman’s unwavering devotion and triumph over dark powers, reflecting the forces of dharma and the cosmic justice upheld by Goddess Kali.
