It is believed that the Shri Veni Madhav Temple in Prayagraj is mentioned in sacred scriptures like the Matsya Purana, Agni Purana, and Padma Purana. These texts refer to this region as the first seat (asana) of Lord Vishnu. According to legend, after protecting his devotees from the demon Gajkarna, Lord Vishnu chose to reside in Prayagraj. The demon Gajkarna had swallowed the sacred waters of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers, disrupting their divine flow. During a fierce battle, Lord Vishnu used his powerful Sudarshan Chakra to slay Gajkarna. As soon as the demon was destroyed, the holy rivers began to flow again and returned to their original paths.
