The Mahakumbh, the largest and most auspicious spiritual event in Hindu tradition, is held once every 12 years in Prayagraj. Known as Tirthraj (the king of all pilgrimage sites), Prayagraj is revered for its confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythological Saraswati rivers, which symbolize immense spiritual energy. According to Hindu scriptures, the significance of the Mahakumbh dates back to the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean). After the Devasura Sangram, during the Samudra Manthan, Lord Dhanvantari emerged holding a pot of nectar (amrit). Both the gods and demons desired immortality through the nectar and pursued it fervently. Lord Dhanvantari carried the pot of nectar for 12 days, during which some of the nectar spilled and fell at four sacred places on Earth: Prayagraj, Ujjain, Haridwar, and Nashik. These places became Kumbh Kshetras, where a Kumbh Mela is organized every 12 years when a rare celestial alignment occurs. The 12 days of the gods are equivalent to 12 years on Earth. Therefore, the Maha Kumbh is held every 12 years. The Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj is organized when Jupiter is in Taurus and the Sun is in Capricorn. This alignment occurs in 2025, marking the commencement of the Mahakumbh. During this period, the positive spiritual energy at the Triveni Sangam (confluence of the rivers) reaches its peak, making it an ideal time for performing sacred rituals and pujas.
Adding to this spiritual grandeur, the Ekadashi falling during the Mahakumbh is highly auspicious for worshipping Devi Lakshmi and Lord Narayan. According to the Shrimad Bhagavat Purana, Maa Lakshmi emerged as the eighth jewel during the Samudra Manthan and chose Lord Vishnu as her consort, signifying the union of divine grace and preservation.
