According to a Puranic legend, during the Samudra Manthan, Swarbhanu deceitfully sat among the devas and consumed Amrit. When Lord Vishnu realized the deception, He severed Swarbhanu’s head from his body with the Sudarshan Chakra to prevent him from becoming fully immortal.
However, since Swarbhanu had already consumed Amrit, he became immortal. The lower part of Swarbhanu’s body became Ketu, while the severed head became Rahu. It is believed that this severed head fell at this very place in Pauri, which later came to be known as the Rahu Temple.
