According to the Matsya Purana, a battle took place between Lord Shiva and the demon Andhakasura. During this battle, a drop of sweat fell from Lord Shiva's body, resulting in the birth of the planet Mars. Mars absorbed all the blood from the demon's body and turned red. After the war ended, all the gods established a Shiva lingam at that place and named it Mangal Nath Mahadev. This temple is located in Ujjain, which is why Ujjain is referred to as the "birthplace of Mars." Lord Shiva is also called "Mahakal" because He transcends time and death.
