Gaya is a revered site where people from across the country and abroad come to perform Pitru Puja to fulfil their desire for the salvation of their ancestors. According to the Puranas, an Asura named Gayasura performed intense penance and received a boon from the gods, which he later misused to torment the deities. The gods sought refuge in Lord Vishnu, who subdued Gayasura by placing His foot on his chest. When Gayasura's head trembled, Lord Vishnu placed His mace on it, calming him. Pleased with Gayasura’s repentance, Lord Vishnu granted him the boon that anyone performing Pitru Puja in Gaya would help their departed souls attain salvation. Along with the Pitru Dosha Nivaran Puja in Gaya, special rituals such as the Kashi Ganga Aarti and Rameshwaram Til Tarpanam will also be conducted for the peace of ancestral souls. Participating in the sacred Ganga Aarti of Moksha Dayini (the giver of liberation) , Maa Ganga in Kashi is believed to cleanse sins, grant peace to ancestral souls, and liberate them. Similarly, performing Til Tarpan in Rameshwaram holds immense spiritual significance. As per ancient texts, after defeating Ravana, Lord Rama and Sita Devi created a Shivalingam from sand in Rameshwaram and performed a special puja to absolve themselves of any doshas. Moved by their devotion, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati appeared to bless them, cleansing them of all sins.
