The Ambubachi Mela is an annual fair celebrated as a special festival of worship of tantra and power. It is celebrated every year in the month of June. It is believed that the tantric practices that are not successful elsewhere in the world are fulfilled here during this festival, which is why devotees from all over the country and the world come here for darshan. According to legends, the Ambubachi Mela is celebrated in the joy of Maa Kamakhya menstruating. This festival lasts for three days, during which the Kamakhya Temple remains closed as the Devi is in her resting phase. After three days the Kamakhya temple reopens and grand puja is conducted for Maa Kamakhya as this day is considered very auspicious because Maa Kamakhya is believed to have renewed her energy and divine power during her menstruation.
Worshipping Maa Kamakhya on this day yields a thousand times more results. Those devotees who cannot visit the Kamakhya Teerth Kshetra during this time can keep the objects which are Energised/Abhimantrir during the puja in their homes. Shri Shaktipeeth Kamakhya Temple is where Her ‘Yoni’ (womb or vagina) fell. Therefore, this pilgrimage site is associated with desires, relationships, fertility and marital life. She is worshipped here in the form of a stone (supposedly her ‘Yoni) that is kept moist all the year round in the ‘Garvagriha’ or the sanctum sanctorum.
Every year, the Ambubachi Mela is celebrated here, during which the doors of the Kamakhya temple are closed and no auspicious activities take place. According to belief, during the Ambubachi Mela, Maa Kamakhya menstruates for three days, causing the water of the Brahmaputra River flowing behind the temple to turn red. Maa Kamakhya, being the Goddess of Desires, blesses her devotees with love, marital bliss, health, wealth and happiness, fulfilling all their wishes.
