Shakti Peeth Maa Mahalaxmi Ambabai Temple, Kolhapur, Maharashtra

Shakti Peeth Maa Mahalaxmi Ambabai Temple, Kolhapur, Maharashtra
The Kolhapur Mahalakshmi Ambabai Temple is considered one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. Shakti Peethas are associated with Shakti (the divine feminine power). According to Hindu mythology, when Sati, the wife of Lord Shiva, died by self-immolation during the Daksha Yajna, Lord Shiva carried her body in grief. In his sorrowful dance of destruction, the Tandava, the body of Sati was dismembered, and her body parts fell at various locations across the Indian subcontinent. These places came to be known as the sacred Shakti Peethas.

In Kolhapur Mahalakshmi Ambabai Temple, it is believed that the divine eye of Sati had landed. Shakti is worshipped in the form of Mahalakshmi in this temple. Situated on the banks of Panchganga, this temple is like a doorway to the mystical ‘Dakshin Kashi'. Constructed in approximately 700 AD, it takes its name from Ambabai (another name for Mahalakshmi). Unlike most other Hindu deities in temples, this deity faces the west (Dakshin). The Sun’s rays fall directly on the idol here during sunset on certain days of the year. This marks the celebration of ‘Kirnotsav’ at Shri Mahalakshmi Ambabai Temple.People invoke her blessings for a brighter financial future and overall well-being.
