On Naag Panchami, there is a tradition of worshipping twelve serpents. Their names are Anant, Vasuki, Shankh, Padma, Kambal, Karkotak, Ashvatar, Dhritarashtra, Shankhpal, Kaliya, Takshak, and Pingal. Therefore, in this puja, twelve silver serpents will be worshipped, and after the completion of the ritual, these silver serpents will be placed in a coconut shell and immersed in the Narmada River. Conducting this grand ritual at a Jyotirlinga increases its significance even more. According to legends, the god of wealth, Kuber, was a great devotee of Lord Shiva. To please Lord Shiva, Kuber performed severe penance at Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga, where he established a Shivling. Pleased with Kuber’s devotion, Lord Shiva made him the treasurer of the gods. Since then, it is believed that worshipping Shiva here grants relief from financial problems. According to a mythological story, Lord Shiva comes here to rest at night after wandering through all the three worlds.
