Shri Haat Kalika Temple, Pithoragarh ,Uttarakhand

The history of Shri Haat Kalika Temple dates back thousands of years. It is said that the Manaskhanda section of the Skanda Purana, written 5,000 years ago, provides a detailed description of the goddess in the region of Darukavana (Gangolihat). In the late 6th century, during his pilgrimage in the Kumaon region, Jagat Guru Adi Shankaracharya, considered to be an incarnation of Lord Shiva, chose this location as a Shakti Peeth and re-established Shri Haat Kalika Temple, making it famous. As per the Skanda Purana, there was great turmoil caused by the demon Sumya in the region of Gangolihat. He had even defeated the deities. In response, the deities went to the Shail Parvat (Mountain) to worship the goddess and seek liberation from the demon. Pleased with their devotion, Mother Durga assumed the form of Maha Kali and annihilated the demon Sumya, after which, the worship of Maha Kali began at this site. Local residents recount that in 1971, during the war with Pakistan, Subedar Sher Singh of the Kumaon Regiment, a resident of Gangolihat, established the idol of Maha Kali in the temple.

To appease Mother Haat Kalika and fulfil their desires, devotees offer sacrifices of goats and sheep. It is said that just invoking the name of Mother Haat Kalika saved the Kumaon soldiers from drowning when their ship was sinking. Before going to war, the soldiers would always come here to pay their respects and seek blessings. The temple priests lay a bed in the temple during the evening, found with the imprints and creases on it while opening the doors of the temple in the morning. This is the supreme evidence that Mother Maha Kali rests at this place during the night. It is believed that all desires offered to Maha Kali in the temple are fulfilled.
