The significance of the Mahakumbh traces back to the Samudra Manthan, where the gods and demons churned the ocean for Amrit (nectar of immortality). Before it emerged, the deadly poison Halahala surfaced, threatening the universe. In supreme compassion, Lord Shiva consumed the poison, turning his throat blue and earning the name Neelkanth. Overcome by its agony, he fell unconscious until Maa Tara, an incarnation of Goddess Durga, placed his head on her lap and nurtured him with divine milk, restoring balance to the universe. This compassionate act of motherhood symbolizes her as the supreme power capable of transcending even Shiva’s invincibility. Hence, Maa Tara is also referred to as the mother of Lord Shiva. Therefore, on the auspicious day of Mahashivratri, Neelkantheshwar Shiv Rudrabhishek will be organized at the Triveni Sangam, and Maa Tara Tarani Puja will be conducted at the Shaktipeeth Maa Tarapith Temple in West Bengal.
