After the self-immolation of Sati, Lord Shiva went into meditation in the Himalayas. This caused disturbance in the functioning of the universe. On Lord Brahma's order, Kamdev and Rati shot arrows of desire at Shiva to break his meditation. Enraged, Lord Shiva opened his third eye and burnt Kamdev to ashes. Upon seeing Rati's grief, Lord Shiva granted her a boon, restoring Kamdev as Ananga, one who exists without a physical body. He then instructed Kamdev to install a Shiva Linga in Ujjain. Kamdev, now in an incorporeal form, instated the Shiva Linga, and it came to be known as Mankameshwar or Kameshwar. It is believed that worshipping Mankameshwar brings liberation from debts, happiness, prosperity, and a healthy and long life.
