Lord Ganesha is worshipped by 1008 names, in addition to his titles of Vighnaharta (remover of obstacles), Sukhakarta (giver of happiness), and Dukhaharta (remover of sorrow). According to legend, in ancient times, a demon named Analasura used to swallow sages and humans, causing chaos in both heaven and earth. All the gods and sages prayed to Lord Shiva, and Lord Shiva said that only Lord Ganesha could destroy this demon. Lord Ganesha swallowed Analasura, but soon he began feeling a burning sensation in his stomach. At that moment, Sage Kashyapa offered him Durva with 21 knots, which Lord Ganesha consumed, and the burning sensation was relieved. Since this incident, the tradition of offering Durva grass to Lord Ganesha began. Therefore, on the auspicious day of Sankashti Chaturthi, chanting Lord Ganesha's 1008 names and offering Durva with each name can be particularly auspicious.
