Shravan Maha Somvar Gangotri Dham Special Shiv-Ganga Pujan and Ganga Dudh Abhishek For Blessings to Attain Good Health and Liberation from Sins

Lord Shiva is known as "Devon Ke Dev Mahadev" (God of Gods). According to scriptures and Puranas, the month of Shravan is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is believed that worshipping Lord Shiva during this month fulfils all desires. Not only is Lord Shiva worshipped during Shravan, but other deities are also worshipped in this sacred month, including Maa Ganga. There is a mythological story behind worshipping Lord Shiva and Maa Ganga together. It is said that Gangotri Dham, one of the Char Dhams in Uttarakhand, is the place where Maa Ganga descended to Earth. In this region, the great king Bhagirath of the Raghu dynasty performed penance to please Lord Shiva. Pleased by his penance, Lord Shiva appeared here and held Maa Ganga in his locks to calm her flow. Therefore the worship of Maa Ganga along with Lord Shiva holds special significance at Gangotri Dham. By worshipping Lord Shiva along with Maa Ganga here during the auspicious month of Shravan, especially on Mondays, devotees receive the blessings of good health and liberation from sins.

From the beginning of the Shravan month, devotees immerse themselves in various rituals to please Mahadev. One of these rituals is Rudrabhishek. There is a belief associated with Rudrabhishek that any devotee who performs the abhishek of Lord Shiva with a specific wish in mind will have their wish fulfilled by Him. Performing abhishek with holy Ganga Jal holds special significance on Mondays during Shravan. Performing Jalabhishek of Lord Shiva with Ganga water is believed to yield multiple times more virtuous results, and performing abhishek of Maa Ganga with milk (dudh) is considered highly beneficial. Therefore, the Shiv-Ganga Pujan and Ganga Dudh Abhishek will be organised on the auspicious day of Shravan Somvar (Monday) at Gangotri Dham. Participate in this puja through Sri Mandir and receive the blessings of Maa Ganga along with Lord Shiva.

Uttarakhand is known as the land of gods. The sacred Char Dham Yatra is undertaken in this divine land. One of the holy places on this sacred land is Gangotri. In the second leg of the Char Dham Yatra, the journey to Gangotri is undertaken. Gangotri is the source of the Ganga River. It is believed that worshipping Maa Ganga at this place fulfils all the wishes of the devotees. According to the Hindu mythology, Bhagiratha had performed penance for his ancestors to attain Moksha and after his tireless efforts, Maa Ganga arrived on earth, but the speed of Maa Ganga was so fast that if she would have fallen directly on earth, the earth would have destroyed. A situation of disaster would have been created and she would have gone to the netherworld.

On the tireless prayers of the devotees, Lord Shiva gathered Ganga in his Jata (locks) and after that Maa Ganga reached the earth via Kailash and saved the ancestors of Bhagiratha. Due to Bhagirath's efforts, the Ganga flowing from Gomukh is also known as Bhagirathi. After flowing some distance, when it merges with the Alaknanda River at Devprayag, it is known as Ganga. It is believed that the stone on which King Bhagirath meditated is still present here and is known as Bhagirath Shila. It is believed that whoever worships at Ganga Ghat in Gangotri Dham on the auspicious day of Ganga Dussehra receives the blessings of Maa Ganga. She grants them purity, prosperity, liberation from sins, and divine grace for their spiritual journey.
