Bhairav severed Brahma Ji's fifth head, but the head stuck to his hand. When he asked Lord Shiva why, he learned it was due to the sin of Brahmahatya (killing a Brahmin). To rid himself of this sin, Bhagwan Bhairav had to roam the universe until the skull detached from his hand. In Kashi, the skull finally fell from his hand, freeing him from the sin. Lord Shiva then appeared and declared that Bhairav, having conquered time, would henceforth be known as 'Kaal Bhairav' and would remain in Kashi as the Kotwal. Since then, Kaal Bhairav has protected Kashi and its devotees from negative energies and obstacles. It is believed that worshipping Kaal Bhairav here on Kalashtami removes the negative and evil energies around the devotee and blesses them with supreme courage. Therefore, Shri Kaal Bhairav Tantra Yukta Mahayagya and Kalabhairavashtakam will be organised on the auspicious day of Kalashtami in Kashi. When Shiva was mentioned, Brahma's fifth head criticised him, which angered Shiva. Kaal Bhairav, who emerged from his wrath, cut off Brahma's fifth head. Shiva then ordered him to travel to the three worlds to be cleansed of the sin of killing a Brahmin. During the journey, Brahma's head was separated from Bhairav Baba's hand in Kashi, and Kaal Bhairav was liberated. Shiva then appointed Kaal Bhairav as the Kotwal of Kashi. It is believed that worshipping Baba Kaal Bhairav, who is enshrined here, also removes all sorrow, evil eye, disorders and sufferings.
