In Kolhapur Mahalakshmi Ambabai Temple, it is believed that the divine eye of Sati had landed. Shakti is worshipped in the form of Mahalakshmi in this temple.
Situated on the banks of Panchganga, this temple is like a doorway to the mystical ‘Dakshin Kashi'. Constructed in approximately 700 AD, it takes its name from Ambabai (another name for Mahalakshmi). Unlike most other Hindu deities in temples, this deity faces the west (Dakshin). The Sun’s rays fall directly on the idol here during sunset on certain days of the year.
