While battling Mahishasura, Chand and Mund attacked her from behind, provoking her anger. With her third eye open, she became Chamunda and fiercely destroyed the two demons. Since then, Sandhi Puja has been performed to honor her fierce form. Therefore it is believed that performing Chamunda Homa during this auspicious period protects the devotees from the negative energies.
