Nandi Pooja Mantra

Nandi Ji is considered to be the most devoted follower of Lord Shiva. It is believed that Nandi Ji conveys the desires of the devotees to Lord Shiva. Nandi Ji holds all the powers of Lord Shiva, which is why it is very important for Nandi Ji to be pleased to receive the blessings of Lord Shiva. According to ancient stories, during the churning of the ocean, Lord Shiva swallowed the poison Halahal to protect the creation, and a drop of this poison fell to the earth. To save the world, Nandi Ji removed that poison drop with his tongue. Since that time, Nandi has been worshipped as the greatest devotee of Lord Shiva. Nandi Ji is Lord Shiva's vehicle and the gatekeeper of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. In Hinduism, Nandi Ji is also considered the primary teacher of the eighteen Siddhars, including Patanjali and Tirumular. In most Shiva temples, a statue of Nandi is placed in front of the main temple, facing the Shivling. According to Shaiva traditions, Nandi is considered the guru of eight disciples – Sanak, Sanatan, Sanadhan, Sanat Kumar, Tirumular, Vyagrapad, Patanjali, and Shiv Yoga Muni.

The Story of Nandi and Shiva

There is a mythological belief that it is essential to worship Nandi along with Lord Shiva. It is through Nandi that Lord Shiva listens to the prayers of his devotees. According to the legend, the great sage Rishi Shilad was practicing a Brahmacharya vow, but one day, he feared that after his death, his family line would end. Distressed by this thought, Rishi Shilad decided to perform a rigorous penance to seek a son who would live forever. Pleased with Rishi Shilad’s penance, Lord Shiva appeared before him and granted him a wish. Rishi Shilad asked for a son who would never die and always have Lord Shiva’s blessings. Lord Shiva granted his wish, and soon, Rishi Shilad found a newborn child in his field. Shiva’s voice then said that this child would be his son. Rishi Shilad named the child Nandi and cared for him. After some time, two ascetics arrived at Rishi Shilad’s house. The sage treated them with great respect, and in return, the ascetics blessed him with long life. However, they did not bless Nandi. When Rishi Shilad asked the reason, the ascetics replied that Nandi had a short lifespan. Upon hearing this, Nandi told his father that since he was born due to Lord Shiva’s blessings, Lord Shiva would protect his life. Nandi then began rigorous penance to please Lord Shiva. Pleased with Nandi’s devotion, Lord Shiva appeared and made Nandi his beloved vehicle. From that time on, Nandi has been worshipped along with Lord Shiva. It is believed that Lord Shiva listens to the prayers of devotees through Nandi.
