Shree Agni Mantra

Learn about the importance and method of chanting this sacred mantra.

Shree Agni Mantra

In Sanatan culture, before performing any task, a proper ritual or worship (Pooja) is conducted. After completing the Pooja, a Havan (fire ritual) is performed. Havan symbolizes the successful completion of the worship. Hence, in Hinduism, Havan holds great significance. Before starting the Havan, the Fire God (Agni Dev) is invoked. In simple words, the Fire God is called upon by chanting a mantra to light the fire in the Havan Kund (fire pit). For this, the priest (Brahmin) chants a special Agni Gayatri Mantra. According to Vedic scriptures, the seven tongues of Agni Dev represent the seven rays of light emanating from his body. His vehicle is a ram. In some depictions, Agni Dev is shown riding a chariot pulled by goats and parrots. Agni's direction is south. Agni is a Vedic deity, the messenger of the gods, and the one who performs sacrifices. Agni is the light of life, present in all living beings. Agni's seven tongues are named: Kaali, Karali, Manojwa, Sulohita, Dhoomravarni, Sphulingi, and Vishvaruchi.

Story of Agni Dev

Agni Dev is considered the twin brother of Lord Indra, possessing similar immense power and strength. According to the Puranas, Agni's wife is Swaha, and they have three sons: Pavak, Pavman, and Shuchi. Agni's father is Lord Brahma and his mother is Goddess Saraswati. His vehicle is a ram. Agni is one of the five elements (Panch Mahabhutas) and is considered the most important part of Yajna (sacrificial rituals) and Havan. Through the Havan, offerings (Ahutis) reach the gods via Agni Dev. Agni is referred to as the "mouth" of all gods. He is the light that illuminates everything and provides fulfillment to all human efforts. All jewels and gems are said to originate from Agni and are also sustained by him. In the Vedas, Agni is regarded as one of the most prominent deities. He is the giver of life, and without Agni, life is akin to death. Agni Dev remains with humans from birth to death. In Hindu marriages, the couple takes seven rounds (Saat Phere) around the sacred fire. In Hindu belief, liberation (Mukti) cannot be attained without the fire of the funeral pyre. According to Hinduism, a Yajna is only complete when the invoked deity is offered their favorite food or offering. It is also believed that sweet substances must be included in the Havan material to satisfy the gods.
