Uncover the sacred tale of Ved Vyas Ji’s birth, a revered sage born to Sage Parashar and Devi Satyavati, destined to guide the spiritual wisdom of the world through scriptures and epic knowledge.
Ved Vyas Ji, the revered sage, was the son of Rishi Parashar and Satyavati. His birth is tied to a fascinating tale from ancient times. While traveling for a pilgrimage, Rishi Parashar arrived at the banks of the Yamuna River. He requested a fisherman to ferry him across the river. The fisherman instructed his daughter, Matsyagandha, to take the great sage across, praising Parashar as a learned master of all four Vedas.
Matsyagandha began rowing the boat with devotion. During the journey, Rishi Parashar was enamored by her and expressed his feelings. Matsyagandha, understanding his intent, replied, “O revered sage, you are a highly esteemed ascetic, knowledgeable, handsome, and from a noble lineage, while I am an ordinary girl with a foul smell and dark complexion. How can a union between us be possible?”
Rishi Parashar explained that he had never been captivated by anyone before, not even celestial beings, but believed it was divine will. With his powers, he transformed Matsyagandha into a radiant, fragrant, and beautiful woman. Matsyagandha, astounded by this transformation, requested the sage to wait until night for their union, as it would not be appropriate during the day.
With his divine abilities, Rishi Parashar created darkness all around, fulfilling her wish. Still concerned, Matsyagandha said, “If I become pregnant, how will I answer my father or face society’s judgment?” Moved by her worry, Parashar gave her several blessings: she would be named Satyavati, gain fame in all directions, and bear a son of immense radiance who would be praised in all three worlds. This son would later divide the Vedas into branches and compose the Puranas.
From the union of Rishi Parashar and Satyavati, Ved Vyas Ji was born. True to the sage’s blessings, Ved Vyas Ji accomplished remarkable feats during his lifetime and left a lasting legacy.
