According to the Puranas, a demon named Gayasura performed severe penance and obtained a boon from Lord Vishnu. After that, Gayasura started to harass the gods by misusing the boon given by Lord Vishnu. The gods, who were saddened by the atrocities of Gayasura, took refuge in Lord Vishnu and prayed to him to protect them from Gayasura. After the request of the gods, Lord Vishnu killed the demon Gayasura by placing his foot on his chest and protecting the gods. Then Lord Vishnu pushed Gayasura into the ground with his foot, and his footprints were formed on this rock. According to religious beliefs, Vishnupada is the only place in the world where one can see the actual feet of Lord Vishnu. There is also a story related to this temple from the Treta Yuga. It is about the time when Lord Sri Rama was returning from exile. Then he along with his mother Sita and brother Lakshmana performed Pind Daan here for the peace of the souls of the ancestors. That is why devotees come here for Pind Daan. According to Sanatana Dharma, Pind Daan performed in Gaya liberates 108 families and 7 generations and they attain Moksha
