The month of Sawan is considered a deeply spiritual period for devotees of Lord Shiva, filled with devotion, penance, and inner peace. It is believed that during this sacred time, Lord Shiva draws even closer to His devotees, and His worship yields special results. Kalashtami during this month is also considered highly auspicious, as it is the day dedicated to the fierce and protective form of Lord Shiva – Kaal Bhairav. Scriptures tell the story of how, to humble Lord Brahma’s ego, Lord Shiva assumed the form of Kaal Bhairav and severed one of Brahma’s heads. This act symbolizes the destruction of arrogance and the protection of dharma. After this incident, Lord Bhairav wandered to seek redemption from the sin of Brahma Hatya (killing a Brahmin) and eventually reached Kashi, where he finally attained peace. From then on, he has been considered the guardian of Kashi, the one who looks after every devotee who visits.
In this sacred city of Kashi, a special 4 Prahar Kaal Bhairav Abhishek Puja, Sringar Sewa, Khappar Sewa and Bhog sewa will be organised by Sri Mandir on Sawan Kalashtami. As the name suggests, this puja is conducted in four phases throughout the day, and each phase involves a specific service to Lord Bhairav:

Kaal Bhairav severed Brahma's fifth head, but the head refused to leave his hand. Lord Shiva then told Kaal Bhairav, “You are now burdened with the sin of Brahmahatya (killing a Brahmin). To rid yourself of this sin, you must wander across the three worlds. The place where Brahma’s fifth head falls from your hand will free you from this curse.” Finally, in Kashi, the severed head dropped from Bhairav Baba’s hand, and he was liberated from the sin. Thereafter, Lord Shiva appointed Kaal Bhairav as the Kotwal (guardian) of Kashi. It is believed that worshipping Baba Kaal Bhairav, at Shri Adi Kaal Bhairav Temple in Kashi, removes all sorrows, evil eye influences, disorders, and difficulties from one’s life.
