Kalashtami, an auspicious day in Hinduism, marks the appearance of Baba Bhairav, a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva. Worshipping Kaal Bhairav on this day is believed to quickly invoke his blessings, making it a highly impactful occasion for devotees, especially in Kashi and Ujjain, two cities closely associated with Lord Shiva’s divine presence. In Kashi, Kaal Bhairav is revered as "Kashi ke Kotwal" (the guardian of Kashi). According to legend, Lord Shiva manifested as Kaal Bhairav to humble Brahma, who had grown arrogant. By severing one of Brahma’s heads, Kaal Bhairav symbolized the eradication of ego but incurred the sin of Brahmahatya. Following Lord Vishnu's advice, he undertook Kapala Bhiksha—a penance carrying Brahma’s skull (Kapala) as a reminder of humility. His redemption came in Kashi, where the skull fell from his hand, and Lord Shiva declared him the conqueror of time, naming him Kaal Bhairav and appointing him as Kashi’s Kotwal. Therefore, to honor Kaal Bhairav on Kalashtami, a special Panch Tatva Abhishek will be conducted at the Kaal Bhairav Temple in Kashi. This ritual symbolizes the five elements of nature (Panch Tatva).
Performing this Abhishek is believed to protect devotees from negative energies, just as Kaal Bhairav safeguards the sacred city.
