Along with Lord Shiva, Rahu is also worshipped in this Rahu temple located in Uttarakhand. This is the one of the few Rahu temples in the country, where Rahu is worshipped along with Lord Shiva. According to legends, Rahu and Ketu used to be a demon named Swarbhanu. During the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean), when Swarbhanu deceitfully sat among the gods and drank the Amrit, Lord Vishnu realized his deception. To prevent him from becoming immortal, Vishnu severed his head from his body with his Sudarshan Chakra. However, because Swarbhanu had already tasted the Amrit, he became immortal. The lower part of Swarbhanu became Ketu, and the upper part, above the torso, was called Rahu. This head part, after being cut off from Sudarshan, fell at Pauri which came to be known as the Rahu temple.
