According to scriptures, this stotra was composed by Adi Guru Shankaracharya. Once, while seeking alms, he arrived at a poor Brahmin’s house. The Brahmin’s wife, with nothing to offer, humbly gave him the only food she had—some dried gooseberries. Moved by their plight, Shankaracharya composed a powerful stotra in praise of Goddess Mahalakshmi, seeking her divine blessings. It is said that, upon reciting the stotra, golden rain showered upon their home. The word "Kanak" means gold, and "Dhara" means flow, giving the hymn its name: Kanakadhara Stotra.
