Akshaya Tritiya, also known as Akha Teej, is one of the most sacred days in the Hindu calendar. The word Akshaya means “indestructible” or “everlasting,” symbolizing that anything begun or acquired on this day—whether it's gold, property, or spiritual practices—is believed to grow and prosper eternally. On this day, devotees worship Goddess Annapurna, the divine embodiment of food and nourishment and an incarnation of Goddess Parvati. As described in the Kashi Rahasya of the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, there is a legend where Lord Shiva once claimed that food was an illusion. In response, Parvati vanished, leading to poverty and famine across the three worlds. Realizing his mistake and the essential nature of nourishment, Shiva repented. Moved by the prayers of all beings, Parvati reappeared in Kashi, set up a divine kitchen, and began feeding everyone. She then took the form of Annapurna, vowing to ensure that no one would ever go hungry. Thus, Akshaya Tritiya also celebrates the divine assurance of abundance and nourishment, symbolized through the worship of Goddess Annapurna in Kashi.
This nourishing and protective energy is also revered as Vishalakshi Devi, the Peethadhishwari—or sovereign goddess—of the Vishalakshi Shaktipeeth, one of the 51 sacred Shakti Peethas. Vishalakshi is worshipped as the Divine Mother of Kashi, an embodiment of Annapurna, and the Shakti counterpart of Kashi Vishwanath. Just as Vishwanath is the Jagat Guru (universal teacher), Vishalakshi represents the eternal feminine force of the city. Together, they symbolize the divine union of Shiva and Shakti—the essence of cosmic balance.
