Kalashtami is an important festival celebrated in Hinduism because it marks the birth of Baba Bhairav. According to the Puranas, Baba Kaal Bhairav is a fierce form of Lord Shiva who controls the cycle of time. It is believed that devotees who worship Baba Kaal Bhairav on this auspicious day remain protected from negative forces. Kaal Bhairav holds a special place in Kashi. According to legends, once Brahma ji, in his pride, considered himself supreme. To rid him of his arrogance, Lord Shiva took the form of Kaal Bhairav and cut off one of Brahma’s heads, symbolizing the destruction of pride. As a result, Kaal Bhairav incurred the sin of Brahma-hatya, and on the advice of Lord Vishnu, he began wandering with Brahma's head in his hand to free himself from this sin. This journey is called Kapala Bhiksha, which symbolizes deep repentance and humility, as he wandered with an empty skull. Finally, the skull fell from his hand in Kashi, where he was freed from the sin. It was then declared that Kaal Bhairav had conquered the cycle of time, and his name would be Kaal Bhairav, who would protect the city as the Kotwal of Kashi. Thus, Kaal Bhairav is worshipped as the deity who liberates from the sins of life and the suffering of all past lives.

Kaal Bhairav severed Brahma's fifth head, but the head refused to leave his hand. Lord Shiva then told Kaal Bhairav, “You are now burdened with the sin of Brahmahatya (killing a Brahmin). To rid yourself of this sin, you must wander across the three worlds. The place where Brahma’s fifth head falls from your hand will free you from this curse.” Finally, in Kashi, the severed head dropped from Bhairav Baba’s hand, and he was liberated from the sin. Thereafter, Lord Shiva appointed Kaal Bhairav as the Kotwal (guardian) of Kashi.
