.Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, India
Located in the city of Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, the ISKCON Temple is a unique confluence of faith and Hindu culture. It is also known as Radha Madan Mohan Temple. The temple's establishment aims to spread the message of Lord Sri Krishna worldwide. ISKCON stands for the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, and it is renowned for promoting devotion to Lord Krishna globally.
History of the temple
The construction of the ISKCON Temple, also known as the place of Lord Sri Krishna's teachings in Ujjain, took place in 2006. The temple is made of white marble from the city of Makrana in Rajasthan. It is the only temple in Ujjain and among the ISKCON organization that operates entirely on solar energy. Ujjain is associated with Lord Krishna, Lord Balarama, and their friend Sudama, who received their education from Maharishi Sandipani. This connection enhances the special bond of devotees with the ISKCON Temple.
Significance of the temple
The ISKCON Temple promotes and propagates the leelas of Lord Sri Krishna and disseminates His teachings to society. Devotees have a special connection with the ISKCON Temple, especially among foreign devotees who immerse themselves in devotion to Lord Sri Krishna. Before becoming a member of ISKCON, devotees need to renounce tamasic (dark and impure) food, such as garlic, onions, meat, and fish. They are also required to give up alcohol. ISKCON members are required to recite the Bhagavad Gita or any other religious scriptures for about an hour during the evening as per their capacity. Additionally, they must compulsorily chant the 'Hare Krishna-Hare Rama' mantra using a Rudraksha mala.
Architecture of the temple
The construction of the ISKCON Temple in Ujjain was completed in 2006. The temple has three sacred areas housing idols of Lord Krishna and Radha with the Gopis, Lord Balarama and Krishna, and Nityananda Gauranga (avatars of Krishna and Balarama). The temple showcases a remarkably beautiful idol of Murli Manohar (Lord Krishna playing the flute) and His beloved Radharani. Like all ISKCON temples, there is a Tulsi garden here. The temple's dome features a fascinating depiction of the Raas Leela of Lord Krishna and Radharani over a lotus flower.
