A well-known legend is associated with Bhasma Holi. According to it, Goddess Parvati wished to marry Lord Shiva, but since Shiva was deeply engrossed in meditation, he did not pay attention to her. Seeing Parvati’s sincere efforts, Kamadeva, the god of love, was pleased and decided to assist her. He shot a floral arrow at Lord Shiva to disrupt his meditation. Enraged by this act, Shiva opened his third eye, and the fire of his wrath reduced Kamadeva to ashes—Kamadeva being a symbol of desires.
Following this event, Shiva devotees began applying sacred ash (bhasma) to their bodies and celebrating Bhasma Holi, symbolizing liberation from worldly attachments and the attainment of self-realization. It is believed that playing Bhasma Holi, performing Rudrabhishek, and chanting the Shiva Tandava Stotram on this sacred day help eliminate negativity, confusion, fear, and mental burdens. Rudrabhishek pleases Lord Shiva in his Rudra form, pacifying all planetary afflictions and removing obstacles, thus granting mental, physical, and spiritual strength.
