In Hinduism, Monday is devoted to Mahadev, the Lord of Lords. According to a Puranic tale, it was on a Monday that Chandra Dev worshipped Lord Shiva. Pleased with his penance, Mahadev relieved him of the dosh. Since then, Monday has been considered highly auspicious for Shiva worship. During his penance, Chandra Dev recited the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra to please Lord Shiva. Scriptures describe this mantra as supremely beneficial. It is believed that the mere chanting of this sacred mantra grants good health, long life, and divine blessings from Lord Shiva. It is also said that when this mantra is chanted along with a sacred Homa dedicated to Lord Dhanvantari, the divine healer, the ritual becomes even more powerful. In Sanatan Dharma, Lord Dhanvantari is regarded as an incarnation of Lord Vishnu and the bestower of health. As per a Puranic legend, after emerging from the ocean during the Samudra Manthan, when Dhanvantari requested his divine post from Lord Vishnu, he was told that he had arrived a little late. Vishnu assured him that he would take birth in the royal lineage during the second Dwapar Yuga and be revered in all three worlds. Thus, during the second Dwapar Yuga, in the holy city of Kashi—established by Lord Shiva—Lord Dhanvantari took birth as the son of King Kashi's descendant, Dhanva. He later received the knowledge of Ayurveda from Sage Bharadwaj and divided it into eight branches. It is said that Lord Dhanvantari knew the cure to all ailments. By his grace, devotees can maintain their health and attain a disease-free life. Hence, on this auspicious Monday, Sri Mandir is organizing a sacred ritual at Shri Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga Temple—11,000 Mahamrityunjay Mantra Jaap and Arogya Murti Dhanvantari Shakti Homa dedicated to the deity of health.
