The Shiv Purana highlights the significance of Bel Patra in Lord Shiva’s worship. According to the scriptures, when the poison emerged from the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean), it posed a great threat to the universe. To protect creation, Lord Shiva consumed the poison and held it in his throat. As a result, his body began to burn intensely, spreading unbearable heat across the cosmos, making life difficult for all beings. To neutralize the effect of the poison, the deities offered Bel Patra to Lord Shiva, which helped soothe his suffering. Since then, Bel Patra has been considered sacred and dear to Mahadev, and offering it to him has become a revered tradition in Shiva worship. In honor of this divine significance, on Mahashivratri, during the 4 prahar (Brahma Muhurta), a grand offering of 5,000 Bel Patras and a sacred Shivalinga Ganga Jal Abhishek will take place at Omkareshwar Temple in Kashi and Shri Pashupatinath Mahadev Temple in Haridwar. This ritual is conducted specifically during Brahma Muhurta, as per ancient scriptures, as this is the time when divine energies descend to Earth. The moments before sunrise are considered highly auspicious, as they radiate the strongest positive energy across the universe.

The Shiv Purana describes how King Bhagirath took a vow to bring Maa Ganga to Earth to grant salvation to his ancestors. However, the mighty flow of the Ganga was too intense, and to contain its force, he followed Lord Brahma’s advice and performed severe penance to please Lord Shiva. Moved by Bhagirath’s unwavering devotion, Lord Shiva held the Ganga in his matted locks, taming its fierce current. Since then, Shiva has been revered as "Gangadhar" (the bearer of the Ganga).
