Govardhan Puja Mathura Special Govardhan Panchamrit Abhishek and Giriraj Shadoshopchar Puja for Protection from Negative Influences, Misfortunes and Enemies

In Hinduism, the Pratipada Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Kartik is celebrated as Govardhan Puja, also known as Annakut. This festival is observed with great enthusiasm in northern India, especially in the Braj region. Annakut or Govardhan Puja began during the Dwapara Yuga after the incarnation of Lord Krishna. Govardhan Parvat is revered as a form of Lord Krishna. The legend of Govardhan Puja is connected to the Dwapara Yuga when Lord Krishna devised a divine play to dispel the arrogance of Indra Dev. One day, Krishna noticed that all the residents of Braj were preparing to worship Indra Dev. When Krishna asked why they were performing puja for Indra Dev, Maa Yashoda explained that Indra Dev brings rain, resulting in good crops and fodder. Then, Lord Krishna said that it is the duty of Indra Dev to bring rain. If we need to worship, we should worship Govardhan Parvat, because our cows graze there, and we also receive fruits, flowers and vegetables from Govardhan Parvat. The residents of Braj abandoned the worship of Indra Dev and began to worship Govardhan. In response, an enraged Indra unleashed a devastating rainstorm. People began to flee to protect their families and animals, blaming Krishna for the calamity. At this moment, Lord Krishna lifted Govardhan Parvat with his finger, providing shelter to all. After witnessing Krishna's divine act, Indra realised his mistake and sought forgiveness from Him. The tradition of worshipping Govardhan Parvat began after this.

Govardhan is also known by another name, Giriraj, where "Giri" means mountain and "Raj" means king. It is believed that those who perform the Govardhan Panchamrit Abhishek and Giriraj Shodashopachara Puja on this day are protected from negative influences, misfortunes, and enemies. Just as Krishna lifted Govardhan Parvat to protect the people of Mathura from Lord Indra’s storms, performing the Govardhan Panchamrit Abhishek and Giriraj Shodashopachara Puja invokes divine protection from all forms of harm—natural calamities, personal misfortunes, and hidden adversaries. By honouring Giriraj, devotees invite blessings of strength and resilience, empowering them to overcome challenges. The Govardhan Panchamrit Abhishek involves ceremonially bathing the Govardhan Shila with Panchamrit, a mixture of five sacred ingredients: milk, curd, honey, ghee, and sugar. On the other hand, Shodashopachara Puja involves worship with sixteen offerings. Participate in this puja through Sri Mandir that will be organised on the auspicious occasion of Govardhan Puja at the Shri Giriraj Ji Mukharvind Temple in Mathura.

Lord Shri Krishna, known by names such as Govardhan Nath, Govardhan Dhari, and Giridhar, manifested on the sacred land of Shri Giriraj Govardhan, which has a profound connection with the residents of Braj and the great saint Vallabhacharya. It is said that in the caves adorned with precious jewels in Golok Dham, Shri Govardhan engages in divine pastimes with Shri Thakurji, Shri Swamini ji, and the devotees of Braj. From there, Thakurji ordered Mahaprabhu Vallabhacharya to descend to Earth for the salvation of living beings. In 1466, on the day of Naag Panchami, a resident of Braj witnessed the left arm of Lord Shri Govardhan Nathji on Govardhan Hill. This was the same arm with which Shri Krishna lifted the Govardhan Mountain to protect the residents of Braj from the wrath of Indra. After this, the residents of Braj worshipped the Lord's left arm for 69 years, and a fair (mela) was held every year on Naag Panchami.

In the year 1478, a miraculous event occurred when the cow of Saddu Pandey named Dhoomar shed a stream of milk into a hole on the Govardhan Parvat. Saddu Pandey saw the manifestation of Shri Govardhan Nathji's face there. From that point on, the residents of Braj began to know him by the name Devdaman. Saddu Pandey's wife and daughter would go daily to offer the milk from Dhoomar to the Lord. In 1493, Shri Govardhan Nathji commanded Mahaprabhu Vallabhacharya to manifest his complete form. Mahaprabhu immediately came to Braj and listened to the story of Shri Nathji's manifestation from Saddu Pandey in the village of Anyor. The next day, Mahaprabhu, along with the residents of Braj, went to see Shri Nathji on Giriraj Govardhan. Upon seeing Shri Nathji, Mahaprabhu was deeply moved and embraced the Lord. Shri Nathji told Mahaprabhu, "Build a temple for us here and begin our service in it." Mahaprabhu promptly constructed a small temple and installed the Lord in it. Later, on the day of Akshaya Tritiya in 1519, Shri Nathji was installed in the new temple. Even today, the service of Shri Nathji is performed by the devotees of Vallabhakul, and this place is highly revered in Braj.
