Just as Lord Hanuman protects his devotees from all problems and grants victory over enemies, Lord Bhairav, another Rudransh (element of Lord Shiva), is revered for dispelling fear and shielding devotees from harm. There is an ancient story behind the origin of Lord Bhairav. Once, a dispute arose between Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma over supremacy. To resolve it, a fire pillar appeared, challenging them to find its beginning or end. Lord Vishnu admitted defeat, but Brahma falsely claimed he reached the top. Angered by this deception, Lord Shiva manifested as Bhairav, severing Brahma’s fifth head, but the kapal (skull) of Brahma was struck to his hand. This act was seen as Brahmahatya (the sin of killing Brahma), and Bhairav had to wander the world as penance. In Kashi, the skull fell from Bhairav’s hand, freeing him from the curse. From then, Shiva declared Bhairav the Kotwal (guardian) of Kashi, where he has continued to protect the city and its devotees from evil forces.
Similarly, Maa Kali also protects her devotees from evil energies and negativity. According to the scriptures, the gods struggled to defeat the demon Raktabija, who was blessed with the power to reproduce from every drop of blood that touched the ground. As the gods fought him, his blood created more demons, making him nearly invincible. To defeat Raktabija, Maa Kali appeared and spread her tongue over the battlefield, ensuring that no blood fell to the ground, thus preventing the demon from respawning. In this way, Maa Kali protected the gods from destruction.
