Baba Bhairav severed Lord Brahma’s fifth head, but it did not leave his hand. This act was considered Brahmahatya (the killing of a Brahmin), and to be freed from this sin, Bhairav had to wander the world. Eventually, in Kashi, Lord Brahma's skull fell from Bhairav's hand, and he was freed from the curse of Brahmahatya. Then, Lord Shiva declared that Bhairav had conquered the cycle of time, and thus, his name would be 'Kaal Bhairav,' and he would be the guardian of Kashi. Since then, Kaal Bhairav has protected Kashi and safeguarded devotees from evil forces. It is believed that worshipping Kaal Bhairav in Kashi drives away negative and evil energies from around the devotee and grants them immense courage.
