The tradition of celebrating the Dahi Handi Pujan dates back to the Dwapar Yuga. It is observed as a symbol of Lord Krishna's childhood pastimes. Krishna was extremely fond of curd, milk, and butter. He, along with his friends, would often steal butter (Makhan) from the neighbouring houses, which earned him the nickname "Makhan Chor". To prevent this, the Gopis started hanging the butter pots at higher places, but even this did not deter the mischievous Kanha. He and his friends would form human pyramids to reach the pots and enjoy the butter together. These childhood exploits of Lord Krishna are celebrated through the Dahi Handi Pujan. The significance of Baal Krishna Abhishek and Dahi Handi Pujan increases manifold when performed in Mathura, the birthplace of Lord Krishna.
