In the city of Kashi, which is known as the abode of Lord Shiva, there are several extraordinary Shivalingas, one of which is Gauri Kedareshwar Temple, renowned for its immense significance. According to religious beliefs, visiting this Shivalinga is considered as auspicious as visiting Kedarnath in Uttarakhand.

According to religious legends, King Mandhata, a descendant of Lord Rama's lineage, was a committed devotee of Lord Shiva. He used to visit Kedarnath regularly and offered Lord Shiva khichdi. Following Lord Shiva's advice, he also performed rigorous penance in Varanasi. Through his penance, Lord Shiva appeared from Khichdi, manifesting as the Shivalinga known as Gauri Kedareshwar. This Shivalinga in Kashi consists of two parts, symbolising Hari-Hara. It is believed that along with the presence of Gauri, Kedareshwar, Mahavishnu and Mahalakshmi in this Shivlinga, there is a presence of Goddess Annpoorna too, as it is made-up of Khichdi.
