Along with being loyal to his duties, he was also a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. He used to fast regularly, do charity and remain engaged in religious activities.
One day King Mandhata took a break from his royal duties and started worshipping Lord Vishnu in the dense forest on the banks of the Narmada River. He was performing meditation to attain salvation by staying away from the worldly illusions.
Meanwhile, a wild bear was roaming in the forest. He was hungry and angry. The bear moved towards King Mandhata and caught his leg with his pointed teeth. The king was so immersed in his meditation that he did not think it appropriate to resist. He continued to remember Lord Vishnu’s name even while suffering pain.
The bear badly injured the king's leg, his body trembled with pain, but he did not get distracted. He was thinking in his mind that this is the result of the sins of his previous births, which is now coming to an end. He kept chanting the name of Lord Vishnu while enduring the pain of his body.
After seeing his devotion towards him, Lord Vishnu appeared. His divine form was extremely captivating. He immediately drove the bear away with his brilliance. Seeing the king's pain, Lord Vishnu affectionately told him,
O King! You have passed a difficult test. Your devotion is amazing and exemplary. The end of your suffering is now near. If you observe the fast of Varuthini Ekadashi, all your troubles will go away and you will get the benefit of virtue.
