Once Mother Parvati was listening to the glory of all the Chaturthi dates that come throughout the year from Lord Ganesha. She asked, "O son, in which form are you worshipped on the Chaturthi of Krishna Paksha of Chaitra month and what is its significance?" Lord Ganesha replied, "O mother, on this day, I am worshipped in the form of Bhalchandra. On this day, all the troubles of the devotees are removed, if they keep fast for the whole day and worship me with Shodashopachar in the evening. On this day, devotees should fast by drinking Panchgavya after eating Brahmin food. By this fast, all the siddhis are attained and happiness and prosperity comes in life. Now I will tell you a story of this fast."
In ancient times, there was a glorious and brave king named Mayurdhwaj. All the people in his kingdom were happy and prosperous. The king was busy with religious rituals, but there was one sorrow in his life. He had no child and he was deprived of the happiness of having children.
He tried many remedies, but nothing worked. Finally, with the blessings of Maharishi Yagyavalkya, he was blessed with a beautiful son. After the birth of the son, the king handed over the entire governance of the kingdom to his minister Dharmapala and himself started spending time with his family.
Minister Dharmapala also ran the kingdom efficiently. He had five sons, who got married. The minister's youngest daughter-in-law was religious by nature and was a devotee of Lord Ganesha. She used to worship daily and observe fasts on every Sankashti Chaturthi ritually.
Once the Chaturthi of Chaitra Krishna Paksha came. The minister's younger daughter-in-law observed the fast of Bhalachandra Sankashti Chaturthi ritually.
But her mother-in-law did not like it. She said angrily, "What kind of tantra-mantra are you doing? Do you want to control my son?"
The daughter-in-law politely replied, "Mata ji, this is not any tantric worship. I am observing this fast for the peace and protection of my family. By observing this fast, Ganesh ji removes all troubles."
But the mother-in-law became angry. She also provoked her son and said, "Your wife is doing tantric sadhana against our house. This has to be stopped."
The husband also got influenced by his mother and harassed his wife a lot, but she remained firm. She completed the fast and worship of Lord Ganesha with full devotion.
Seeing the daughter-in-law in pain, Lord Ganesha kidnapped the son of King Mayurdhwaj with his Maya. He hid the prince in the palace of Minister Dharmapal and left his clothes and ornaments in the palace.
When King Mayurdhwaj saw that his son was missing, he became very worried. He searched the entire kingdom, but the prince was not found anywhere. Eventually, the king found the prince's clothes and ornaments in the minister's palace.
The king got very angry. He said to the minister Dharmapal, "If you do not find my son, you will be given the death penalty!"
The minister tried a lot, but there was no trace of the prince. He returned to his palace in fear.
Seeing the minister in fear, his younger daughter-in-law said, "O father, all this is the result of Lord Ganesha's anger. Mother-in-law and my husband insulted Lord Ganesha, so this crisis has come. If you ask the king and the people to observe Sankashti fast, Ganesha ji will be pleased and return the prince."
The minister realized his mistake. He apologized to the daughter-in-law and asked the king to observe Sankashti Chaturthi fast. The entire kingdom, including the king, observed Sankashti fast and worshipped Ganesha with devotion.
Lord Ganesha became pleased and immediately revealed the prince to everyone.
The king was very happy to see his son. He thanked the minister's daughter-in-law and ordered the entire town to observe a fast on every Sankashti Chaturthi.
From the story, we learn that worshipping Lord Ganesha and observing a fast on Sankashti Chaturthi removes all troubles.
Whoever observes this fast with devotion and faith, gets happiness, prosperity and success.
