Baba Bhairav severed Lord Brahma’s fifth head, but it did not leave his hand. This act was considered Brahmahatya (the killing of a Brahmin), and to be freed from this sin, Bhairav had to wander the world. Eventually, in Kashi, Lord Brahma's skull fell from Bhairav's hand, and he was freed from the curse of Brahmahatya. Then, Lord Shiva declared that Bhairav had conquered the cycle of time, and thus, his name would be 'Kaal Bhairav,' and he would be the guardian of Kashi. Since then, Baba Kaal Bhairav has protected Kashi and safeguarded devotees from evil forces. It is believed that worshipping Kaal Bhairav in Kashi drives away negative and evil energies from around the devotee and grants them immense courage. It is also believed that if one worships Baba Kaal Bhairav on Kalashtami, then it can be doubly beneficial. When Shiva was mentioned, Brahma's fifth head criticised him, which angered Shiva. Kaal Bhairav, who emerged from his wrath, cut off Brahma's fifth head. Shiva then ordered him to travel to the three worlds to be cleansed of the sin of killing a Brahmin. During the journey, Brahma's head was separated from Bhairav Baba's hand in Kashi, and Kaal Bhairav was liberated. Shiva then appointed Kaal Bhairav as the Kotwal of Kashi. It is believed that worshipping Baba Kaal Bhairav, who is enshrined here, also removes all sorrow, evil eye, disorders and sufferings.
