The origins of the Kumbh Mela trace back to the legendary churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan). After a curse from the sage Durvasa, prosperity vanished from all three realms. To restore balance, Lord Vishnu persuaded both gods and demons to churn the ocean together.
Among the fourteen treasures that emerged from the churning was Lord Dhanvantari, who appeared holding the pot of nectar (Amrit). Initially unrecognized, Lord Shiva later promised that Dhanvantari would be born into a royal family in the Dwapar Yuga to propagate Ayurveda, bringing health and well-being to all.

Following Narada Muni’s advice, the demon took a purifying bath in the Triveni Sangam, which healed his ailments.
